NOTAM: F7F in 2016

Post by srgalahad » Fri Jan 29, 2016 5:38 pm

The Milton Shupe F7F Tigercat for FS9 and ported to FSX was approved for the 2014/15 races (~389KTAS) as a "Normal" White List entry. The download/install shows a folder name: "F7F-300"
In 2015 a new package was released for FS9 and Gordon Madison did a 'native' FSX conversion. The new model was not re-tested as it was not expected to vary in performance from the previous approved version.

First of all the new -1 variant is slightly faster but significantly limited in range due to a lack of an external tank. While there is a small chance it might get approved it is not a viable Race model due to this limitation.
Second, the new -3N (Night fighter) is slow and thus would be compliant but not viable as a race aircraft (~372 KTAS).
Most importantly, the new -3 version (with external tank) matches the range of the approved model but speed is in deviance by a significant amount (~16 Kts). This would not meet approval based on known and accepted data.

The design team is attempting to make adjustments to bring the Flight Model within compliance and if this effort is successful and meets test criteria we anticipate being able to allow the 2015 version of the F7F as a Normal category aircraft. This revision will be inside the normally-allowed time limit for changes but, as this is a popular and useful model, the Executive Committee is willing to make an exception. If/when a revised flight model is approved it will be advertised by NOTAM here with a link or attached file.

Until such NOTAM is issued, the Shupe/Madison 2015 model is not allowed to be used in the RTWR.

Update February 8, 2016

F7F Tigercat models approved for use in 2016:
1. The existing AlphaSim F7F-3N (w/ TFalley FM optional) and Milton Shupe F7F-3(variously known as 2013/-300/WIP) models currently on the White List.
2. F7F-3 for FS9 by Milton Shupe (2015) -single-seat
3. F7F-3 Tigercat "Metal" Native for FSX and P3D by Milton Shupe and Gordon Madison (2015) -single-seat
4. F7F-3 Tigercat Native for FSX and P3D (Blue) by Milton Shupe and Gordon Madison (2015) -single-seat

Links to the approved 2015 models are provided below.

NOTE: The 2015 models, as originally released, are noticeably faster than the previously-approved versions. While this would normally not be acceptable the widespread adoption of these models has made the current decision necessary.
Tom Falley provided (Feb. 3rd on SOH) a revised FDE for the 2015 Shupe/Madison F7F-3 Single Seat model for FSX. This new FDE revision is not approved for use in 2016. This was tested and while the performance has been adjusted to values close to the (currently approved) 2013 FS9/FSX-ported model, it only applies to the FSX version and the 2015 FS9 version still remains unadjusted but as fast as the unmodified FSX model. This inequality weighed on the decision.

The Shupe/Madison FSX "La Patrona" model is prohibited. This model has a different FM which is unacceptably fast in any case.
Pilots considering the two-seat and night-fighter versions are advised that these are tested to be slower - Interchanging and/or blending of .air and.cfg files is not allowed.

The Committee examined several factors in making this decision: a) The previously-noted adoption of the newer model by pilots; b) the late date of availability of revisions; c) the revision resolves one issue but not all; d) the potential for confusion with a multiplicity of models/mods/performance indicated that uniformity was more important than absolute conformity to 'spec' at this time.

For clarity: when posting a flight using any of the above models, the specific model should be identified. Further, all the above models are considered to be of one type (F7F) within the Rules.

Glad to see there's finally some closure for our tricycle pilots!
